The Drive-in Experience
The summer of 2020 has been a drastically altered landscape for crowd management companies around the world, with the majority of festivals, shows and events cancelled following the arrival of Covid-19.
For those events that are able to go ahead, they’re doing so under unprecedented conditions. One “new” form of entertainment (or old?) is the return of drive-through events. Phoenix Events (East) Limited recently deployed their team of experts to oversee operations at two venues, each operating over a four-day period.
The Drive-In Experience, which hosted entertainment at sites in Norwich and Thetford, took place over two extended weekends in August.
Performers on the lineup included DJ Dave Pearce, Ben Langley and The Squirrels, ensuring a good turnout from fans throughout the duration of the festival. Jack and Tim from Britain’s Got Talent, one of the few acts to receive Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer, also attended as visitors.
Billed as a “100% contact-free” event inline with government regulations, customers were required to watch the show from either inside or outside of their vehicles. They also had the option of bringing chairs to sit safely in an allocated area next to their car. Experts from Phoenix Events (East) Ltd were on hand to provide a world-class traffic management, security and stewarding service for the event. This involved undertaking track and trace protocols at the front gate to comply with new government legislation, ensuring that all visitors to the event were recorded. Stewards were also present to organise the parking of cars in a socially distanced way, explaining the rules to all attendees in a clear, friendly manner.
Before, during and after the show, Phoenix Events staff made sure that social distancing warning signage was clearly visible at all times, ensuring The Drive-In Experience met government guidelines. Furthermore, they also designed and enforced a one-way toilet system, overseeing the successful flow of visitors in the correct direction. All toilets, benches and tables were regularly sanitised with stations around the site being regularly replenished.
Adam Harding, Managing Director at Phoenix Events (East) Limited, said, “The event was well received and we worked hard to make sure everyone was safe. Even though we are in a ‘new normal’, people were happy to follow the new rules and this did not stop them enjoying themselves.”
